CULTIVATING OUR FUTURE

At Lazy Point Farms, we define cultivators as the farmers, harvesters, processors, and hatchery operators behind helping kelp thrive.

There are so many reasons to grow seaweed beyond the traditional ‘for-profit’ and ‘for food’ paradigms. From improving water quality to adding a revenue stream on top of your existing shellfish business to creating a nutrient-rich topping for your pizza or compost for your garden, this diversification of “why we grow” is what makes the New York seaweed community so unique and resilient.

We provide tailored, one-on-one support to all kinds of growers- from town programs to hobbyist homeowners to nonprofits to those in the commercial industry. We provide this support to growers in all kinds of waterways- from Long Island’s cleanest food-grade certified to some of NYC’s most compromised, and everything in between.

Support all stages.

A solid seaweed industry starts with solid hatcheries. New York State is unique in its combination of town, nonprofit and commercial hatcheries that can support the wide variety of local nonprofit and for-profit commercial seaweed programs. We support our local hatcheries by providing equipment and access to new technology, fostering communication among each other, and purchasing the spools they produce, which we then distribute for free to our partner growers.

Our cultivation support extends after you’ve pulled your seaweed out of the water.

We’ve provided tailored processing infrastructure to growers from individual shredders for small operators to greenhouses for towns and two-phase systems

We believe:

there’s no farm too small, and we think any reason to grow it is a good one.

We even want to help you if you don’t have a farm at all but want to learn how to wild-harvest. Visit this link for more information.

Not sure where to start? Need some troubleshooting help with your farm equipment setup? Want to double your production? Need a buyer? Want to find out more about end uses for your harvest? Want to figure out the best way to process your seaweed?
